Following on Senator Maria Cantwell's leadership in the Senate, our delegation of Congressional members in the Northwest recently secured nearly $3 billion in federal funding for imperiled salmon and community investments as part of the recent bi-partisan infrastructure bill.

Restoring a freely-flowing lower Snake River by removing four dams is the biggest and best step we can take to protect its salmon and steelhead from extinction and rebuild abundant populations. The Murray-Inslee salmon initiative represents a critical window of opportunity to develop and deliver a comprehensive legislative package in Congress in 2022 that meets the urgent needs of Snake River salmon and Northwest communities.

Subject: Thank you for supporting Northwest salmon recovery - action to restore the lower Snake River is needed in 2022!

Message:

Thank you for your leadership and support to secure nearly $3 billion in federal funding for salmon and community investments across the Pacific Northwest. Protecting and restoring abundant populations of salmon and steelhead is critical to the people and communities, wildlife and ecosystems, and identity and future of our region. I ask you to continue this very important work with other policymakers, Northwest tribes, stakeholders, and constituents to develop and deliver a comprehensive plan that will protect and recover endangered salmon and steelhead populations in the Snake River Basin. The science is clear: restoring a freely flowing lower Snake River by removing its four federal dams is critical for protecting its imperiled fish populations from extinction. With 5,000 miles of pristine, protected upstream habitat, it also represents one of our nation’s very best salmon/river restoration opportunities today. The Senator Murray/Governor Inslee initiative to develop a comprehensive solution next year offers real promise. I urge you to develop and deliver a comprehensive solution for Snake River salmon and Northwest communities in 2022. A successful legislative package must both (i) authorize dam removal and (ii) invest in communities and infrastructure. I support making major investments in our region’s communities and critical infrastructure - energy, irrigation, and transportation - to replace the services provided by these dams today. Our state and region urgently need a comprehensive plan that will protect and restore endangered salmon, orcas, and other fish and wildlife, and invest in our communities in a manner that brings everyone forward together. Salmon and orca are running out of time. We need to restore the lower Snake River as quickly as possible - within the next 3-5 years - or we risk losing Snake River salmon and Southern Resident orcas forever. The Nez Perce Tribe's recent quasi-extinction analysis makes this crystal clear. Salmon - and the orcas that depend upon them - are struggling for survival today. Adult fish returns to the Snake River this year are some of the lowest ever. Many communities and businesses are struggling - faced with shrinking fishing opportunities and season closures. Our nation also has a responsibility to uphold the promises it made to the tribal people of the Northwest more than a century ago. Snake River salmon and steelhead simply cannot wait. Thank you again for your support to secure significant funding for salmon recovery priorities across our region. I urge you to continue this important work in the new year to urgently address the needs of salmon in the Snake River, and to invest in our communities and economy at the same time.
