Snake River salmon - and press them to act quickly - time is running out!

Last October, Sen. Patty Murray and Gov. Jay Inslee announced their next steps to develop an action plan to protect and restore Snake River salmon and steelhead. The senator and governor committed to producing a long-term plan by or before July 31, 2022 - just a few months from now. They’re working closely with Northwest tribes, policymakers, stakeholders, and communities to understand how to replace the lower Snake River’s dams’ services. They have put dam removal - as it must be - squarely on the table.

But salmon and orcas are running out of time. They - we - must act quickly or we will lose these irreplaceable species forever. We only have a few months to seize this window of opportunity. Our elected leaders are stepping forward. We need them to develop and deliver a plan this year to restore this historic river, recover its salmon and invest in our communities.

Thank you for your recent commitments to work expeditiously with Northwest tribes, other policymakers, stakeholders, and constituents to develop a comprehensive plan to protect and recover endangered salmon and steelhead populations in the Snake River Basin. I urge you to decide quickly to restore a freely flowing lower Snake River by removing its four federal dams and pass legislation in 2022 authorizing their removal. The science is clear: restoring the lower Snake River is an essential cornerstone for any effective salmon recovery strategy in the Columbia Basin. With 5,000 miles of pristine, protected upstream habitat, it also represents one of our nation’s very best salmon/river restoration opportunities today. I also support making major investments in our region’s communities and critical infrastructure - energy, irrigation, and transportation - to replace the services provided by these dams today. Our state and region urgently need a comprehensive plan that will protect and restore endangered salmon, orcas, and other fish and wildlife, invest in our communities in a manner that brings everyone forward together. Salmon and orca are running out of time. We need to restore the lower Snake River as quickly as possible - within the next 3-4 years - or we risk losing Snake River salmon and Southern Resident orcas forever. The Nez Perce Tribe's recent quasi-extinction analysis makes this crystal clear. Salmon - and the orcas that depend upon them - are struggling for survival today. Adult fish returns to the Snake River this year are some of the lowest ever. Many communities and businesses are struggling - faced with shrinking fishing opportunities and season closures. Our nation also has a responsibility to uphold the promises it made to the tribal people of the Northwest more than a century ago. Snake River salmon and steelhead simply cannot wait. Thank you again for your commitment to urgently address the needs of salmon in the Snake River and across our region, and to invest in our communities and economy at the same time.
