Thank Governor Brown for speaking up for Snake River salmon and steelhead!

Gov. Kate Brown recently published a guest opinion in the East Oregonian newspaper reiterating her support for an urgent, comprehensive solution that recovers endangered salmon and steelhead by removing the lower Snake River dams and investing in communities and critical infrastructure.

She properly recognizes the costly failure of past recovery efforts, the urgency for meaningful action now, and the opportunity before us today to bring people together from across the Northwest to develop a durable plan that restores salmon abundance and ensures community prosperity.

In her guest opinion, the governor articulated an inclusive vision for salmon and steelhead and communities and the economy in Oregon and across the Pacific Northwest:

“It is my priority to ensure we have robust, harvestable salmon and steelhead populations throughout the Columbia Basin for generations to come. We can do so in a manner that combats climate change with growth in clean and renewable energy, ensures a cost-effective irrigation system for farmers and ranchers, invests in safe and economical transport of goods and secures vibrant recreation opportunities in and throughout the Columbia Basin. It won’t be easy. But it’s the only way to ensure a vibrant future for the region. I’m ready to sit down with anyone willing to work with me to make that future a reality. Let’s get it done.”

Earlier this year, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson kicked off a critical conversation about the future of wild salmon and the lower Snake River dams. Gov. Brown has joined this conversation and her leadership is helping build momentum for lasting solutions for salmon and people in the Pacific Northwest. This is exactly the kind of bold leadership we need to address the challenges we face today.

Dear Governor Brown, I’m writing to thank you for speaking up recently in the East Oregonian and for your steadfast leadership and clear vision for restoring abundant salmon and steelhead populations and investing in vibrant communities and cultures in Oregon and across the Pacific Northwest. With your leadership, Oregon has expanded its critical role as defender and champion of Columbia-Snake River salmon and steelhead. It is inspiring to see you and other leaders driving critical conversations about the need to develop and deliver lasting solutions for endangered salmon and steelhead populations and the irreplaceable benefits they bring to our state and region. As your recent guest opinion acknowledges, our emblematic native fish are running out of time and we need to act. As an Oregonian, I strongly support restoring the lower Snake River by breaching its four federal dams as quickly as possible. Without urgent action, state, tribal and independent scientists tell us we will lose Snake River wild salmon and steelhead forever. Importantly, lower Snake River dam removal also represents perhaps our greatest river and salmon restoration opportunity anywhere in the nation today. The Snake River Basin - including northeast Oregon - contains more than 5,000 river and stream miles of pristine, protected, and historically highly productive salmon and steelhead habitat. And rebuilding healthy Snake River chinook salmon runs is very important for other struggling fish and wildlife populations, including of course the critically endangered Southern Resident orcas. I also appreciate your commitment to upholding our nation’s responsibilities to Pacific Northwest Tribes and your strong support for investing in communities and infrastructure that may be affected by dam removal. Both are essential elements for an effective and durable plan. Northwest people and policymakers must come together quickly to develop a comprehensive plan that restores the river and invests in clean and affordable energy, reliable transportation systems, and prosperous farming and fishing communities. Realizing this vision represents a tremendous opportunity to create thousands of new jobs and position our state and region for the challenges we’ll face in the years ahead. Sincerely,
