Not so long ago, more than a million wild steelhead would flood into the Snake and Columbia rivers to spawn before returning to the Pacific Ocean to do it all over again.

Not anymore.

Scientists are predicting this year’s return of wild Snake River steelhead will be among the lowest ever recorded. Unless we act quickly, one of nature’s recurring miracles in the Northwest will fade away for ever.

Time is running out and we need urgent action - before Columbia-Snake steelhead - and valuable Northwest livelihoods and traditions they support - disappear forever.

Fortunately, earlier this year, Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson proposed a plan to invest big in the Northwest — to protect, restore and reconnect endangered fish populations and their habitats and to support agriculture, transportation, clean energy, and new, local jobs at the same time.

Congressman Simpson's groundbreaking proposal has launched a conversation about collaborative, regional solutions to restore the lower Snake River and its fish and make big investments in local jobs, communities and infrastructure.

To seize this opportunity, other public officials in the Northwest need to step up as well.

I am writing to you to ask for your urgent leadership to bring people together in support of a comprehensive solution to recover imperiled Snake and Columbia River steelhead populations and invest in Northwest communities and infrastructure. Time is running out and we need urgent action to protect steelhead - and Northwest livelihoods and our special way of life - from disappearing forever. Not so long ago, more than a million steelhead would flood into the Snake and Columbia rivers to spawn before returning to the Pacific Ocean to do it all over again. Not anymore. Scientists are predicting that this year’s return of Snake River steelhead will be among the lowest ever recorded. Unless we act quickly, one of nature’s recurring miracles in the Northwest will fade away for ever. As a result of these devastating returns, fishing seasons are being curtailed and closed across the Snake and Columbia River Basin. Hundreds of businesses in scores of communities across the Northwest are paying the price. I ask you for bold, urgent leadership to protect and restore abundant, self-sustaining and fishable populations of steelhead and salmon in the Columbia Basin as part of a larger, comprehensive investment package that: 1. Focuses on actions that will restore the lower Snake River, including removal of its four federal dams. The science is clear: we will lose Snake River fish forever if the dams remain in place. Restoring the lower Snake River will reconnect imperiled fish to thousands of miles of high quality upstream habitat in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. 2. Includes funding to invest in affected communities and infrastructure - to ensure clean affordable and reliable energy, continued transportation of commodities to market and irrigation for adjacent farms. 3. Upholds our nation's commitments to Northwest tribes, and embraces their leadership. Native American tribes have led effort to recover native fish populations for decades. 4. Produces an actionable plan quickly - in months rather than years. Time is running out for endangered fish in the Columbia-Snake Basin that many communities, peoples and businesses rely upon. To seize this opportunity, the Northwest needs your urgent, engaged leadership to bring bring people together around a comprehensive solution that recovers our native fish and moves everyone forward together.
