Urge Washington and Oregon Governors to Pave the Way for an Extinction-free Energy Future

Washington's Commerce Department is currently working to analyze electric energy use by the state government and identifying opportunities to assure that future energy comes from new, utility-supplied renewable resources that do not harm salmon and other native fish. This work is a pivotal model for other energy users and represents an urgent next step to reduce demands on federal hydropower, including the four lower Snake River dams. By expanding clean energy production and updating grid transmission infrastructure, the region will ensure resilience and energy stability as well as support with action transition away from the energy services of the lower Snake River dams in a manner that maintains reliability, affordability, adequacy, and diversifies the electric power system.

Governors Inslee and Kotek have the power to take tangible next steps to recover and protect salmon, restore a free-flowing lower Snake River, and maintain reliable energy in the region. Urge Governor Inslee to keep this work moving forward expeditiously. And urge Governor Kotek to analyze electric energy use by the Oregon state government and identify opportunities to assure that future energy comes from new, utility-supplied renewable resources that are salmon friendly (i.e., non-hydro).

Thank you for your leadership thus far to restore and protect salmon and native fish in the Columbia-Snake River basin. In collaboration with the four lower Columbia Tribes, we must now urgently develop and support clean, non-hydropower resources and transmission to replace the marginal power generated by the four lower Snake River dams. The lower four Snake River dams provide highly seasonal, limited, replaceable energy services, producing only 750 average megawatts each year, making up 3% of total energy generation in the Northwest. So long as these dams stay in place, salmon and orca hurtle towards extinction, and millions of dollars will be needed to update aging turbines and infrastructure. All the while, there is a flood of non-hydro renewable energy projects just waiting to be built in the Northwest that will easily replace the energy the Snake River Dams provide now. Please direct your agencies to quickly deploy, or seek from the utilities that serve them, clean, extinction-free power generation that keeps energy prices affordable, and supports the resiliency of stakeholders across the region.
