Our nation needs to uphold tribal treaties and restore salmon and orca - before it’s too late

All remaining Snake River salmon and steelhead populations face extinction today. We ask you to join Save Our wild Salmon to stand with Northwest tribes in their leadership to protect and restore these emblematic fish and the many benefits they bring to tribal and non-tribal communities and to the fish and wildlife populations of the Pacific Northwest.

Restoring the lower Snake River by removing its four costly dams represents our very best opportunity anywhere on the West Coast to rebuild salmon abundance. But time is running out. Northwest salmon and communities need urgent solutions and funding to (1) restore a freely lower Snake River; (2) replace the services the dams provide; (3) honor commitments to Northwest tribes; and (4) create jobs and opportunity across our region.

We can’t wait any longer or extinction will be our legacy.

We need urgent leadership by our Northwest senators and House members to seize the opportunity before us. Congress needs to help develop and deliver a comprehensive solution for our region’s salmon, orcas and communities.

I am writing to ask you to secure funds in 2021 and to help develop an urgent plan in the months ahead that will restore the Snake River and its endangered salmon, uphold our nation’s commitments to Northwest tribes, and invest in our communities to help our region prosper in the decades ahead. Time is running out today for many salmon populations and the orcas that rely upon them. The urgency to act is great. Recent analyses by the Nez Perce Tribe shows Snake River salmon and steelhead stocks on a trajectory to extinction while data this summer shows adults returning this year at some of their lowest levels ever. This summer’s high temperatures and hot river water is making a bad situation much worse. Steep salmon declines in recent decades threaten the health and well-being of tribal and non-tribal fishing communities across the Pacific Northwest. The Snake River Basin holds the greatest potential for restoring salmon and steelhead populations in the anywhere on the West Coast. The science is clear: protecting Snake River fish from extinction requires bypassing the lower Snake River dams. I strongly support the development of a comprehensive regional plan that restores the lower Snake River through dam removal and makes major investments in regional energy, transportation and irrigation sectors. We need your help to develop a comprehensive solution that protects and restores endangered salmon and orcas, meets the needs of communities, and brings everyone forward together. We need your leadership to help develop a Snake River salmon recovery action plan that is: 1. Based upon the best available science - and includes bypassing the lower Snake River dams. 2. Supported with substantial funding in 2021 to assure effective implementation. 3. Respectful of the sovereignty, rights and interests of Northwest Tribes. 4. Developed in months, not years. Our region has spent decades in court and billions of dollars on inadequate and illegal salmon plans – and we’re suffering great loss and pain and uncertainty today as a result. I ask for your commitment to stop this long-standing failure and to work urgently with others in our region to prevent extinction and rebuild abundance here in the Northwest. I look forward to hearing from you on these important matters and am ready to support you and others to urgently develop a legal, science-based action plan that restores Snake River salmon and upholds our nation’s sacred responsibilities to tribes across the Pacific Northwest.
