Send a strong message to policymakers:
"Snake River salmon need a river and Northwest communities need solutions!"
The federal agencies that manage Snake and Columbia River dams have once again rejected desperately-needed salmon restoration actions in favor of maintaining the costly, risky and uncertain status quo.
Released in July, the government's "new" plan repeats past mistakes and rejects restoring the lower Snake River by removing its four federal dams. This crucial step is one part of a larger solution urgently needed by endangered salmon populations and Northwest communities.
We must think - and act - bigger and bolder. Elected leaders in the Pacific Northwest must act now to bring people together and develop a plan that restores the lower Snake River, recovers its imperiled salmon and invests in regional fishing and farming communities. Right now we have an opportunity to not only achieve the largest river restoration and salmon recovery in history but also to make critical investments that enhance communities and ensure a vibrant future for farming, fishing, recreation, port, and tribal businesses across the Northwest.
Petition to Northwest Governors, U.S. Senators and Members of the House of Representatives:
The undersigned call on your urgent and active leadership to develop and deliver solutions that comprehensively address the linked challenges facing Northwest salmon and orca, fishing and farming communities, and the region’s energy system. An effective solution for salmon and people in the Northwest must include restoring a free-flowing lower Snake River combined with key investments in communities and infrastructure.
The federal government’s “new” plan for protecting endangered Snake and Columbia river salmon and steelhead populations reflected in its recently released FEIS and 2020 Biological Opinion is woefully inadequate and almost certainly illegal. Snake River salmon populations today are among the lowest on record; Southern Resident orcas are critically endangered; communities throughout the region face high costs, risks and uncertainty. The status quo is not working for anyone and a new approach is urgently needed.
Your leadership working closely with the Northwest stakeholders, sovereigns and citizens is urgently needed to develop and implement a comprehensive plan that (1) recovers salmon abundance, (2) invests in fishing and farming communities, (3) supports a reliable, affordable and clean energy system and (4) upholds our nation’s treaty responsibilities to Native American Tribes. Thank you.
