At the end of August, Senator Murray and Governor Inslee took an historic step when they released their final Lower Snake River Dam Benefits Replacement Report, recommendations, and public statements outlining a way forward to protect and recover endangered Snake River salmon and steelhead populations and aid endangered, salmon-dependent Southern Resident orcas. Their long-anticipated recommendations include this essential conclusion: “The science is clear that – specific to the Lower Snake River – breach of the dams would provide the greatest benefit to the salmon.”

The findings from this report lay the foundation for salmon and orca recovery, justice for Northwest Tribes, and investment in a prosperous and sustainable regional future.

We must move quickly and efficiently to plan and implement (i) the replacement of services and (ii) removal of the lower Snake River dams. Time, however, is not on our side - With salmon and steelhead populations and the Southern Resident orcas struggling for survival today, immediate and sustained action is essential.

Support Senator Murray, Governor Inslee, Tribal Nations, other Pacific Northwest leaders, and the Biden Administration to implement plans to remove the four lower Snake River dams, protect wild salmon, and invest in our communities! A report from NOAA Fisheries Service confirms what scientists have been saying for years: Northwest salmon will go extinct without a comprehensive plan to remove the lower Snake River dams and replace their services. “The science robustly supports process-based stream habitat restoration, dam removal (breaching), and ecosystem-based management, and overwhelmingly supports acting, and acting now. [...] It is not too late to rebuild the vibrant, productive ecosystems on which most fish and wildlife resources, as well as the people of the Columbia River basin, depend.” Additionally, The ‘Lower Snake River Dams Benefits Replacement Report' released by Senator Murray and Governor Inslee makes clear that the dams’ services – energy, irrigation, and barge transportation - can be fully, feasibly, and affordably replaced with reliable, cost-effective alternatives. It's clear--- removing the four lower Snake River dams is the only remaining viable option to restore our state's rapidly declining salmon populations and stop salmon extinction. We cannot continue the status quo of spending billions of dollars on failed recovery and mitigation efforts, expensive litigation, and maintaining outdated infrastructure. Salmon and steelhead are continuing to decline despite these massive, failed investments. We need to urgently implement a comprehensive approach-- to save salmon, invest in updated infrastructure, increase economic opportunities, and move everyone forward together! We have an historic opportunity to invest in the Northwest future AND achieve the greatest river restoration and salmon recovery effort in history. Please work alongside other Northwest leaders to develop and invest in a comprehensive solution to stop salmon extinction, honor tribal treaty rights, create economic opportunities, and upgrade the aging energy, irrigation, and transportation infrastructure!
