Contact Sen. Murray and Gov. Inslee today: Salmon and orcas are running out of time!

Last May, Senator Patty Murray and Governor Jay Inslee released a joint press statement about the need for urgent action to protect endangered Snake and Columbia river salmon and steelhead from extinction. They promised to lead a "formal, regional process" that is based on science and "ensuring all voices in the region are heard." Their statement emphasized that all credible recovery options must be considered, "including the potential breaching of the four lower Snake River dams.”

This year, the Pacific Northwest has suffered record-breaking temperatures, dangerously hot rivers (see our Hot Water Reports for more information) and devastatingly low adult salmon and steelhead returns. Time is running out for our region's emblematic fish and the many benefits they bring to our region's people, fish and wildlife, and ecosystems.

Senator Murray and Governor Inslee must act now to forge a comprehensive regional solution that restores abundance and prosperity to salmon, orcas, tribes, and communities.

Subject: Please act! Time is running out for Snake River salmon and Southen Resident orcas

I am reaching out to follow up on your May 14 statement concerning the urgent plight of endangered salmon in the Snake and Columbia rivers. In that statement, you made a commitment to lead "a formal regional process" that is based on the best science, and that ensures everyone's voice is heard and considered. More than four months later, salmon and orcas and our communities need your help and leadership. I ask you to move forward with great urgency to engage stakeholders and sovereigns to develop and deliver a comprehensive regional plan that will save endangered Northwest salmon and orcas from extinction and invest in our region's communities and critical energy, transportation and agricultural infrastructure. This year's adult Snake River salmon and steelhead returns are some of the lowest on record. This summer, another orca has disappeared and is presumed dead. Just 74 whales survive today. The changing climate is increasing the urgency for action. Time is running out and I and many other residents in Washington and the Northwest want to hear your plans for protecting salmon and orcas and investing in our region’s abundance. I urge you to announce your plans and process as soon as possible, and I ask you to include these essential priorities: 1. Focus on actions that will restore the lower Snake River, including removal of its four federal dams. The science is clear: we will lose Snake River salmon forever if the dams remain in place. Restoring the lower Snake River will reconnect imperiled salmon and steelhead populations to thousands of miles of high quality upstream habitat in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. 2. Include funding to invest in affected communities and infrastructure - to ensure clean affordable and reliable energy, continued transportation of commodities to market and irrigation for adjacent farms. 3. Uphold our nation's commitments to Northwest tribes, and embrace their leadership. Native American tribes have led this effort for decades—most recently with the Salmon Orca Summit this past July where they emphasized the high stakes for tribal communities, highlighted the urgency for meaningful action, and outlined the necessary elements of a regional solution. 4. Produce an actionable plan as soon as possible - and no later than early next year, in time for Congress to pass any necessary legislation and appropriations needed to implement it.
