Extinction or Abundance? We can choose.
Contact your U.S. senators in Washington State and Oregon today!
All Snake River salmon and steelhead populations today are at risk of extinction.
Southern Resident orcas are also critically endangered – Just 75 whales remain today. Restoring abundant chinook salmon populations is key to their survival and recovery. Salmon declines also threaten the well-being of tribal and non-tribal fishing communities across the Northwest.
Restoring the lower Snake River by removing it four costly dams represents our very best opportunity to rebuild salmon abundance here on the West Coast. Fortunately, political support for restoring this historic river is growing today.
In February, Rep. Simpson (ID) unveiled his groundbreaking proposal to restore Snake River salmon and invest in communities. Since then, other Northwest public officials - including Gov. Brown (OR), Rep. Blumenauer (OR), Gov. Inslee and others – have stepped up and committed themselves to work urgently with Northwest people to restore endangered salmon and invest in our communities.
Time is running out. Northwest salmon and communities need urgent solutions and funding to (1) restore salmon by removing the lower Snake River dams; (2) invest to replace the services the dams provide; (3) honors commitments to Northwest tribes; and (4) creates jobs and opportunity across our region.
If we wait any longer, extinction will be our legacy.
Leadership by our U.S. Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell in Washington and Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley in Oregon is essential for seizing the opportunity before us. Congress needs to help develop and then deliver a solution, and these four senators are key to that. Snake River salmon and Southern Resident orcas face extinction today – our Northwest leaders must act this year.
Please contact your U.S. senators in Washington State and Oregon: Ask them to lead in 2021 - to fund and develop a comprehensive solution for Northwest salmon, orcas, and our communities.
