Critically endangered Southern Resident orcas are doing their part. It’s time to do ours - and we need your help. Washington State Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell need to hear from you today.

While Southern Resident orcas have welcomed three new calves in the past year, just 75 individual whales survive today. Without enough salmon to eat, however, they are struggling to survive.

Restoring the lower Snake River is our very best opportunity to restore salmon to abundance across the Northwest region. And it is an essential piece of a regional strategy to rebuild healthy salmon populations needed to sustain Southern Resident orcas, as well as assist struggling tribal and fishing communities.

We stand with Northwest tribal leaders, business owners, local communities, clean energy experts, and countless citizens. NOW is the time for a solution that works for salmon, for orcas, for tribes – for all of us.

There is great urgency today. Snake River salmon and Southern Resident orcas both face extinction. We must act quickly or we will lose them forever.

Fortunately, we also have a tremendous opportunity before us in 2021 - to come together around a comprehensive solution that restores the lower Snake River and its salmon, upholds our nation’s responsibilities to tribes and makes important investments in our region’s communities and infrastructure. Seizing this opportunity today depends on leadership from Senators Murray and Cantwell working with others in the Northwest to develop and advance a comprehensive solution in Congress that moves everyone forward together.

I am writing to ask for your urgent leadership - to work with other Northwest policymakers and people to develop and advance a comprehensive plan in Congress this year to restore salmon abundance, help feed hungry Southern Resident orcas, and support more just and prosperous communities in Washington State and across our region. Your leadership is vital for seizing this opportunity and crafting a regional package that solves long-standing problems in a manner that brings everyone forward together. Our region’s salmon and orca populations face extinction today – and there is great urgency to act. This year, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to develop and advance a comprehensive plan in Congress that makes big consequential investments in our region’s lands and waters, economy and communities. Restoring the lower Snake River through dam removal is an essential component of this type of regional investment package. Restoring the lower Snake River would achieve our nation's largest river and wildlife restoration initiative in history and take an important step toward upholding our nation’s responsibilities to Northwest Tribes. Earlier this year, Rep. Simpson unveiled an ambitious proposal – and invited others to work with him - to address a set of linked challenges facing our region. His proposal aims to make critical progress to: — Restore imperiled salmon populations in the Snake River Basin and regionally; — Uphold our nation’s responsibilities to Northwest Native American Tribes; and — Create economic opportunity with significant investments in our region’s fishing, farming, and river communities and essential energy and transportation infrastructure. This groundbreaking proposal has great potential, but it is not perfect. There are parts of it that concern me. The overall framework, comprehensive approach, targeted investments, and action to restore salmon and their habitats, however, provide a solid foundation from which to work. Your urgent involvement and committed leadership are essential to refining this package and providing a critical boost for salmon, orcas, and our communities and economy. This kind of comprehensive approach can help us emerge from the "COVID economy" and position our state and region for the challenges - and opportunities - we face in the 21st century.
