On March 9th, more than 225 food professionals sent a letter thanking Sen. Murray and Gov. Inslee for their recent commitments to protect Snake River salmon and asking Sen. Maria Cantwell for her assistance this year to develop a comprehensive, long-term solution for imperiled Columbia-Snake River Basin salmon. The signers recognize that “salmon is much more than a fish; it is a valued business partner.” The letter thanks these policymakers for their past efforts to protect salmon and calls on their “continued leadership at this moment of great urgency and opportunity.”

The letter stresses that urgent work is needed now - in 2022 - to prevent further extinction and to restore salmon abundance in the Snake River Basin in a manner that brings everyone – including farmers, fishermen and other food producers - forward together.

“We need new policies and programs that will provide both fisher and farmer greater certainty and the opportunity to thrive. Please seize this window of opportunity to develop a comprehensive package that restores the lower Snake River, recovers salmon, and keeps farmers and fishermen gainfully employed and feeding our communities.”

Thank you for your past efforts to protect and restore healthy, abundant salmon populations in Washington State and regionally - and for your recent commitment to develop a plan in 2022 to recover imperiled Snake River salmon and steelhead. I appreciate your leadership today working with tribes, other policymakers, and regional stakeholders and constituents to develop a comprehensive solution to meet the needs of Snake River fish and Northwest communities. The science is clear: restoring a freely flowing lower Snake River is essential to protect its salmon and steelhead from extinction. Snake River salmon, Southern Resident orcas, tribal communities, and Northwest fishermen and farmers urgently need a comprehensive plan that restores the lower Snake River, invests in communities, and moves everyone forward together. I support making necessary investments in our region’s communities and critical infrastructure - energy, irrigation, and transportation - to replace the services provided by these dams today. Salmon - and the many benefits they bring to our region - are running out of time. We need to restore the lower Snake River as quickly as possible - within the next 3-4 years - or risk losing these historic, once-abundant populations forever. Many communities and businesses are struggling as a result of steep fish declines - and our nation must uphold its promises to Northwest Tribes made more than a century ago. Restoring the lower Snake River is an essential cornerstone for any effective salmon recovery strategy in the Columbia Basin. With 5,000 miles of pristine, protected upstream habitat, it also represents one of our nation’s very best salmon/river restoration opportunities today.
